New Delhi: The Congress has decided to join hands with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the formation of a new government
in Tamil Nadu after the new party’s thumping victory in the just-concluded Assembly elections that dealt a big blow to the southern state’s two big political parties — DMK and AIADMK.
Vijay’s newly formed party TVK, created a significant shift in the Tamil Nadu political landscape by emerging as the single largest party in its debut 2026 Assembly election. The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, making it the single largest party. However, it is 10 seats short of the 118-seat majority needed and is seeking support from other smaller parties.
The Congress on Tuesday claimed that the TVK chief has sought the party’s support in government formation in Tamil Nadu and its leadership has directed the state unit to take a final decision on the matter.
Top Congress leaders held a meeting at party chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Tuesday evening. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi and Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu state unit Girish Chodankar were among those present.
Congress ready to back TVK but with conditions
According to sources, the Congress is ready to extend support to the TVK in the government formation. A letter of support from the party is expected to be submitted to the Governor today.
However, the Congress’s support will be contingent upon specific coalition terms and the role it is assigned within the government. According to sources, the Congress will insist that the TVK maintain a distance from any NDA ally and completely rule out the possibility of forming an alliance with the AIADMK.
Meanwhile, the TVK has made it clear that it is ready to accept support from any political party besides the DMK. According to reports, discussions are currently underway with various parties, with priority being given to smaller factions to facilitate smoother coordination. The Communist parties have requested time until May 8 to finalise their stance.
The TVK is also closely monitoring the internal rifts within the AIADMK, where one faction appears open to accepting external support, while another favours remaining in the opposition. Vijay has held consultations with the Governor, and the swearing-in ceremony is tentatively scheduled for May 7.
