New Delhi: Unprecedented rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods recently ravaged several districts in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), causing significant damage
and loss of life. In response, the Indian government has initiated a multi-pronged approach focused on immediate relief and long-term preventative measures.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is deploying four additional radars in J&K as part of Mission Mausam. These radars, combined with three already operational, will enhance weather forecasting accuracy at the district level, enabling more precise and timely warnings for future events. This improved forecasting is crucial for effective disaster preparedness and mitigation, allowing authorities to better anticipate and respond to weather-related emergencies.
Following the disaster, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh held a high-level review meeting, gathering insights from the Divisional Commissioner Jammu and District Collectors of affected regions—Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Kathua, and Udhampur. The meeting served to evaluate the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts, focusing on the efficient delivery of essential supplies and services to affected families. Dr Singh’s office ensured the distribution of rations, water filters, medical kits, and supplementary funding beyond government relief measures, ensuring no family was left without assistance.
The reports from the District Collectors revealed the scale of the disaster and the ongoing relief work. Significant damage to roads and infrastructure was noted in several areas, with ongoing efforts to restore connectivity. The government emphasised round-the-clock efforts to ensure the prompt supply of food, medicine, and shelter.
The Prime Minister and Home Minister are closely monitoring the situation, highlighting the national priority given to the relief and recovery process. The formation of an inter-ministerial committee, set to visit Kathua, underscores the commitment to a coordinated and comprehensive response. This collaboration between various ministries demonstrates a “whole-of-government” approach to disaster management.
