Somnath Temple history
Somnath Temple earned the title of the “eternal shrine” after it went through repeated invasions and destruction over centuries. Historical records suggest the shrine existed even before the beginning of the Christian era. Archaeological findings support the temple’s multiple constructions before Mahmud of Ghazni attacked it in 1026 and additional attacks in later centuries. The current seventh version of the temple was rebuilt after Independence under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Architect Prabhashankar Sompura designed the present structure, which was inaugurated by India’s first President, Rajendra Prasad, on May 11, 1950.
Somnath Temple spiritual significance
The Hindu scriptures say the temple is closely associated with Chandra, the Moon God. Legends state that Chandra married Daksha Prajapati’s 27 daughters but favoured only Rohini, leading Daksha to curse him with the loss of his radiance. To seek relief, Chandra is believed to have performed intense penance at Prabhas Patan to please Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Shiva freed him from the curse. In gratitude, Chandra established a Jyotirlinga at the site, which was later known as Somnath.
Ancient scriptures also mention that the temple was first built in gold during Satya Yuga, rebuilt in silver by Ravana during Treta Yuga, recreated in wood by Lord Krishna in Dwapara Yuga, and later reconstructed in stone by King Bhimadev.

The present-day Somnath Temple is built in the Māru-Gurjara or Solanki architectural style, known for its intricate carvings and grand stone craftsmanship. Constructed entirely using yellow sandstone, the seven-storeyed temple rises to nearly 155 feet and overlooks the Arabian Sea.
