Chennai: An unprecedentedly high voter turnout has been recorded across Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly elections, with constituencies where Chief Ministerial
candidates contested witnessing a significant increase in votes compared to the 2021 polls.
Kolathur – M.K. Stalin
In Kolathur constituency, where Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin contested, approximately 86 percent of votes were recorded. Out of a total of 211,772 eligible voters, 182,375 cast their votes. Compared to the previous election, when 173,388 votes were recorded, the count increased by approximately 9,000 votes this time.
Edappadi – Edappadi K. Palaniswami
In Edappadi constituency, where AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami contested, 92 percent of the total 274,054 eligible voters exercised their franchise. A total of 254,364 votes were recorded, representing an increase of 7,063 votes compared to the previous election.
Chepauk-Triplicane – Udhayanidhi Stalin
In Chepauk-Triplicane constituency, where Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin contested, 84.34 percent of the 163,866 eligible voters fulfilled their democratic duty. While 135,344 people voted in the previous election, 138,204 people cast their votes this time.
Karaikudi – Seeman
In Karaikudi constituency, where Naam Tamilar Katchi Chief Coordinator Seeman contested for the first time, a total of 226,506 votes were recorded. Out of 303,371 eligible voters, 74 percent exercised their franchise.
Perambur and Trichy East – Vijay
In Perambur constituency, where TVK leader Vijay made his electoral debut, 89 percent of the total 222,792 votes were cast. Compared to the previous election, when 200,387 votes were recorded, a total of 202,944 votes were cast this time, representing an increase of just under 10,000 votes. In Trichy East, the other constituency where Vijay is contesting, 82 percent of the 217,397 registered voters fulfilled their democratic duty, with 180,066 votes recorded.

Post-SIR electorate drop drives turnout surge in Chennai, with 83.41% recorded in 2026 against 59.75% in 2021. The electorate shrank from 40.57 lakh to 28.93 lakh after revision, but votes polled stayed near 24 lakh in both elections. Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar led turnout, while Mylapore and Saidapet remained lower. Polling was brisk, with two-thirds voting before 3 p.m., and 12 of 16 segments crossing 80%.
