Kolkata: West Bengal’s electoral landscape has witnessed a dramatic expansion, with nearly half a million new voters joining the rolls since the official
final list was published on February 28. This significant influx, confirmed by senior officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI), has ignited a fierce political debate across the poll-bound state, with ruling and opposition parties trading barbs over the integrity of the process.
The surge of approximately 500,000 eligible voters stems from a whopping 709,000 Form-6 applications received during the two phases leading up to the close of nominations. This reflects the ECI’s “rolling enrolment” system, which permits citizens to register to vote right up until the nomination period concludes.
While 188,207 new voters had already been incorporated into the final electoral roll released on February 28, an additional 500,000 names were subsequently verified and added over the following month as the nomination process unfolded.
District-level data reveals hotspots of this voter growth. North 24 Parganas led the charge with over 71,000 new registrants, followed closely by Kolkata with nearly 44,000. Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapore also featured prominently among the districts experiencing substantial additions.
With these recent inclusions, the total electorate in West Bengal now stands at a formidable 68.2 million. This vast voting bloc comprises over 34.9 million male voters, more than 33.3 million women, and 1,257 individuals identifying in the third gender category. ECI officials indicated that this number could yet climb higher, as appellate tribunals continue to adjudicate pending registration cases.
Political firestorm erupts
The fresh enrolments have, predictably, thrown fuel onto the already blazing political fires in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, spearheading the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has levelled serious accusations, alleging that workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in “voter hijacking” by filing fraudulent Form-6 applications to enrol “outsiders.” TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee echoed these concerns, claiming that bulk applications were strategically submitted across various constituencies to manipulate voter rolls.
The BJP has vehemently rejected these allegations, accusing the TMC of attempting to discredit the electoral process itself. Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, countered by alleging widespread irregularities in existing voter lists. BJP leader Amit Malviya further questioned the TMC’s claims, implying a lack of substantiation.
ECI Response and Enforcement
In response to the escalating political heat, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal confirmed that all complaints are being thoroughly examined. He issued a stern warning that legal action would be initiated against any individual found to have submitted false applications. Agarwal also reiterated a crucial procedural point, Form-6 applications can only be filed by the applicant themselves and not by a third party on their behalf, a clarification aimed at addressing concerns about proxy registrations.
West Bengal is poised to cast its votes in two phases, scheduled for April 23 and April 29. With the possibility of further additions to the electoral rolls as pending cases are resolved before polling days, the ECI remains vigilant in ensuring the integrity and transparency of the democratic exercise.
