New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav surpassed Rohit Sharma to become the most successful captain in T20Is after India lifted the T20 World Cup 2026 title on Sunday.
India mauled New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to script history by becoming the first team to winback-to-back titles and the first to win the prestigious trophy as a host nation.
India also became the most successful team in T20 World Cup history with a record third title. No team other than India has managed to win the tournament more than two times. India headed into the tournament as favourites, having dominated in bilateral T20Is since their memorable triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. They managed to live up to the expectations, lifting their second title in a row on Sunday.
The victory against New Zealand in the final was Suryakumar’s 42nd win as captain in T20Is since he took over as India’s captain in the shortest format following India’s triumph in 2024. The Indian skipper surpassed former India captain Rohit to become the most successful captain in T20Is in terms of win percentage.
Suryakumar has so far led India in 52 matches and has managed 42 wins, losing only eight matches as captain. Two matches have ended in a no result for India in his tenure. He enjoys a win percentage of 80.77%, which is the best among captains to have led in at least 20 matches in T20Is.
Suryakumar’s win percentage is the best among all and slightly better than Rohit, who retired in 2024 with an impressive win percentage of 80.65% after leading India to 50 wins in 62 matches. Rohit is in the second spot in the elite list, followed by former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to 29 wins in 37 T20Is as captain.

Suryakumar joins Rohit, Dhoni in elite list
Suryakumar also joined the legendary MS Dhoni and Rohit in the elite list of Indian captains to have won the T20 World Cup title. Dhoni led India to their maiden title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007, while Rohit helped India lift their second title in the last edition of the tournament in 2024.
Suryakumar became the third Indian captain to win the trophy after India made light work of New Zealand in the final on Sunday. The 35-year-old is also the first captain in the tournament’s history to win the title at home.
