New Delhi: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has reported another construction milestone, with the third mountain tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra
in five months. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the update on X, giving fresh attention to India’s first Bullet Train corridor.
The latest breakthrough took place in Dahanu Taluka of Palghar district in Maharashtra. For a project of this size, tunnel work is one of those things that looks slow from outside, then suddenly a big update lands.

Bullet Train project hits new tunnel milestone in Maharashtra
Ashwini Vaishnaw posted on X, “Mumbai-Amdavad Bullet Train Project achieves another milestone. 3rd mountain tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra within 5 months (sic).”
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, officially called the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, is being implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited. The project has technical support from Japan and is planned as India’s first high-speed rail network.
The 508 km corridor will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad, covering major cities and economic centres across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
What this means for the corridor
The tunnel breakthrough is expected to help speed up construction activity along the high-speed rail route. Each completed tunnel section clears one more difficult stretch in the project.
The corridor is meant to connect business and urban centres in Maharashtra and Gujarat through trains capable of running up to 320 kmph. Once completed, it will mark a major shift in India’s rail infrastructure story.
