Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Kerala till June 14. It advised the people against fishing
activities along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshdweep coast for next few days as the weather is likely to turn bad.
Issuing a statement, the IMD said that strong winds with estimated speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour may be expected along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts until June 12. It added that there was a possibility of heavy rainfall till June 14. The IMD has also issued an orange alert in three districts of Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur for Thursday.
IMD issues an orange alert for three districts
The weather department, earlier in the day, issued an orange alert for districts like Alappuzha and Ernakulam for three hours. The orange alert is issued when the heavy rainfall between 11 cm to 20 cm is expected.
The weather department has also predicted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and surface winds in these two districts apart from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, news agency PTI reported.
Heavy rains lashed several parts
Earlier on Tuesday, heavy rains along with strong winds lashed several parts of Kerala, mainly in northern part of the state. The heavy rainfall led to massive waterlogging, resulting in evacuation measures in some areas. Notably, authorities have advised people living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant due to the ongoing monsoon season in the state.
The monsoon this year arrived in Kerala on June 4. “The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, some parts of west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep islands, Kerala and Mahe, some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comorin area, southeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of southwest, west-central, east-central and northeast Bay of Bengal today the 4th June, 2026,” the IMD said earlier.
