Mumbai: The BSE Sensex dropped 776.70 points to 82,517.96 on Tuesday. The NSE Nifty declined 216.75 points to 25,496.25. The equity benchmark indices plummeted
nearly 1 per cent in morning trade as IT stocks recorded heavy selling amid rising fears of AI-led disruption.
The stock market was also hit due to the hike in crude oil prices and global trade concerns after US President Donald Trump’s latest tariff remarks also weighed on investors’ sentiment, traders said.
The stocks which majorly declined from the 30-share BSE barometer: Eternal, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Trent, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, ITC, Titan, HCL Technologies, and Infosys.
Gainers from the Sensex constituents: PowerGrid, Asian Paints, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Steel, State Bank of India, and Axis Bank.
Tech stocks, Tariff row hitting Stock Market
“The trend of weakness in tech stocks stemming from the potential AI impact continues. The weakness in the ADRs of Indian IT companies indicates that this segment will continue to remain under pressure,” V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd, told PTI.
The expert said market players globally are keenly awaiting President Trump’s State of the Union address later in the day.
“The EU freezing the deal with US in the light of the tariff changes following the Supreme Court verdict and Trump’s warnings to countries backing away from deals indicate that the tariff drama has more in store for economies and markets. We will have to wait and watch how this drama plays out,” Vijayakumar added.
Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index, Japan’s Nikkei 225 benchmark and South Korea’s Kospi traded in the positive territory, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng traded lower. The US equities market closed nearly 2 per cent lower in overnight deals on Monday. Brent Crude, the global oil benchmark, appreciated 1 per cent to USD 72.13 per barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) purchased stocks worth Rs 3,483.70 crore on Monday, while domestic institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 1,292.24 crore.
On 23 February 2026, the Sensex jumped 479.95 points to end at 83,294.66, while the 50-share Nifty gained 141.75 points to close at 25,713.
