New Delhi: All Central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi will remain closed on September 11 due to the BRICS Summit. The national capital is hosting
the BRICS Leaders’ Summit this year.
The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions issued a memorandum informing about the decision to close all government offices on that day. This they said was done, keeping in mind the magnitude of the event and also the need to minimise inconvenience to the general public.
Earlier even the Delhi government had ordered closure of all government offices on September 11. Apart from this all autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings under the Delhi government will also remain closed on the day of the Summit.
The BRICS Business Forum and the BRICS Leadership Summit is scheduled to be held between September 11 to September 13, 2026. The venue for the events is the Bharat Mandapam in Central Delhi. At least leaders of 30 BRICS nations and partner countries are expected to attend the Summit. Apart from this, heads of international organisations and business representatives from BRICS nations are also expected to attend the 3-day event.
An extensive security arrangement and traffic restrictions are expected to be in place during the Summit. The closure on September 11 will thus help ease the impact of this extensive security and traffic restrictions. However September 12 and 13 is a Saturday and Sunday, so most offices are automatically closed.
In January 2026, India assumed the chairmanship of BRICS. This year’s theme is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. The focus of the grouping this year is people centric and promotes the spirit of “Humanity First”.
Ever since India took over as Chair of BRICS, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements of BRICS members have been held, in at least 25 cities. These are aimed at strengthening cooperation across BRICS’ political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people pillars.
This is the fourth time that India is holding the chairmanship of the BRICS. It previously held the chair in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The country is also a founding member of the international grouping. BRICS is also completing 20 years since its establishment, this year.
