New Delhi: Durga Puja celebrations for Bengali people are not only about feasting and pandal hopping. It is also about decorating the house with alpana
or alpona designs. This floor art is a kind of rich ornamental drawing, created to welcome and appease the goddess Lakshmi and bring in positive vibes. In modern times, although alpana stickers are available, they can never be the same as the traditional alpana made out of rice powder. This form of art is an aesthetic folklore tradition kept alive for a long time.
Alpana can be of numerous types, including geometric lines, nature motifs, Goddess Durga motifs and spiritual symbol motifs. While making alpana is your way of creative expression by choosing any design, the basic element is creating lines and points or a combination of them, such as triangles, squares, stars, flowers, or people. Here we bring the best and most elegant alpana designs to decorate your home during Durga Puja 2026. Delve deeper.
Elegant alpana designs to welcome Maa Durga
1. Maa Durga motif alpana
Opting for a central motif featuring a Goddess Durga and her lion, surrounded by decorative patterns, is a popular alpana design. It matches well with the festive spirit.
2. Lotus flower alpana
In India, the lotus is considered a symbol of purity and divinity. It is a common motif to create Durga Puja alpana. You can draw a big lotus in the centre or use it as a border design.
3. Alpana with auspicious motifs
There are many sacred things associated with Durga Puja, such as the conch shell, a symbol of victory; the owl, a symbol of wealth; and sacred leaves. Take inspiration from these auspicious things to make alpana designs.
4. Harvest and nature alpana
Infuse elements in the alpana designs that represent the harvest season, such as rice sheaves, rice stems, and kashful flowers. These will look elegant and add a spiritual vibe to the decoration.
5. Alpana with celestial elements
Alpana designs can include the sun, moon, and stars to symbolise the balance of day and night and to create a celestial, night-sky effect. These designs, inspired by the celestial elements, not only lend a calming aura but also spiritual energy.
6. Floral and leafy borders
Decorate the entrance to your home with a simple alpana design, including tiny flowers and leaves. These patterns add elegance and grace.
7. Basic kolka alpana patterns
Draw the traditional, stylised leaf shapes known as kolka in a line along the floor or around a central motif.
8. Geometric alpana designs
Create a simple and elegant design with geometric patterns or a series of concentric circles filled with small lines and dots.
9. Alpana with central mandala
Create an intricate, large circular design to create a mandala at the centre of your room or in front of the Maa Durga idol. Incorporate multiple layers of flowers, geometric shapes, and symbols.
Decorating your home with alpana designs is not only about aesthetics but also about celebrating Durga Puja with pure devotion and welcoming Maa Durga. So, enjoy creating alpana designs, the Bengali way of creating rangoli on the floor.
