New Delhi: Congress MLA KS Basavanthappa, who hails from a sanitation workers’ family, is set to be inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet, marking a major
milestone in his political journey. The Mayakonda legislator from Davanagere district will become a minister after being elected to the Karnataka Assembly for the first time in 2023.
Basavanthappa’s rise from a modest background to the state cabinet has drawn widespread attention. Raised in Gandhinagar in Davanagere, he is the third of five children born to Pailwan Sangappa and Hanamakka, both of whom worked as sanitation workers. Basavanthappa himself reportedly worked as a sanitation worker for a period before earning a livelihood through contracts for bicycle stands and public toilets.
After completing his pre-university education, Basavanthappa entered public life through local politics. He first made his mark by winning as a member of the Davanagere Zilla Panchayat from the Anagodu constituency.
The Mayakonda Assembly constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes. Basavanthappa contested the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election as the Congress candidate but narrowly lost. Undeterred by the defeat, he contested again in 2023 and secured victory by just 34 votes, earning his first term as an MLA.
Basavanthappa is also related to former Karnataka minister H. Anjaneya. He is the son of Hanamakka, the sister of the former minister. Recognized as a prominent leader of the Madiga community in the Mayakonda constituency, he has established a strong political presence in the region.
Despite his elevation in politics, Basavanthappa continues to lead a simple life and resides in a rented house in B Block of SS Layout in Davanagere city. His journey from a humble family background to the Karnataka Cabinet is being seen as a notable example of grassroots political advancement.
His brother, KS Govindaraj, serves as the president of the Municipal Corporation Employees’ Association. Basavanthappa’s induction into the cabinet has sparked fresh political discussions in Davanagere district, where his appointment is being viewed as a significant development for the region.
