New Delhi: India’s digital economy has grown at a scale that is now hard to ignore. Internet connectivity has crossed 107 crore connections, while UPI
is processing nearly 75 crore transactions every day, Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan said.
The numbers show how deeply digital systems have entered daily life in India. From paying a tea seller through UPI to storing Aadhaar, marksheets or driving licence copies on DigiLocker, digital public platforms are no longer used only by offices and banks. They are now part of normal household behaviour.
UPI becomes India’s daily payment habit
UPI remains the biggest headline in India’s digital story. The payment system is now handling nearly 75 crore transactions every day. The International Monetary Fund has described UPI as the “world’s largest real-time payments system.”
That line matters. It places India’s payment infrastructure among the most watched digital systems globally.
According to the government, UPI-linked systems have already been adopted in nine countries. More countries are expected to join in the coming years.
DigiLocker, broadband and DBT show wider digital shift
DigiLocker has crossed 70 crore users, according to the latest figures shared by the government. Broadband subscribers are now close to 100 crore.
The Direct Benefit Transfer system has also expanded sharply. The government currently runs 323 DBT schemes and has transferred more than ₹51.5 lakh crore directly to beneficiaries.
Key digital numbers shared by the government include:
- 107 crore internet connections
- Nearly 100 crore broadband subscribers
- Over 70 crore DigiLocker users
- Around 75 crore UPI transactions daily
- ₹51.5 lakh crore transferred through DBT
Smartphones and chips enter the next phase
Krishnan said India’s electronics manufacturing sector has changed strongly since 2014, when the country imported most of its smartphones. Today, smartphones are among India’s leading export categories.
The government’s semiconductor plans are also moving ahead. Twelve semiconductor projects have been approved so far. The CG Semi facility is expected to be inaugurated this week.
AI and strategic technology focus grows
Government sources said India is closely watching global moves in artificial intelligence. Countries such as the United States are bringing safeguards for advanced AI technologies because of their impact on cyber security and other sensitive areas.
India is backing indigenous AI models and local capabilities. With its population, talent pool and expanding digital systems, India wants more control over critical technologies.
