New Delhi: The capital is witnessing intense heat waves with a continuous rise in the mercury each day. On Friday, the daytime temperature touched 41.9
degrees Celsius, which was 0.2 degrees higher than on Thursday.
There are no signs of relief in the coming days as the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, warning of possible heatwave conditions in parts of the city. On Saturday, the minimum temperature at Safdarjung, which is Delhi‘s main station for weather updates, recorded 25.2 degrees Celsius, which is around 2.5 degrees above the normal level.
The different areas have also reported a noticeable rise in night temperatures, with Palam recording 26.8 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar recording 35.1 degrees Celsius and Lodhi Road recording 24 degrees Celsius. This means that the nights are becoming warmer, giving no relief from the daytime heat.
Air quality remains poor
The Air quality also remains poor in the capital. The AQI was recorded at 243 at 9 am on Saturday, which is slightly higher than the previous day’s average temperature. According to the weather forecast, the air quality is expected to remain poor over the weekend.
According to the CPCB standards, an AQI of zero to 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’.
What next?
In the coming days, it’s expected that Delhi’s maximum temperatures are expected to stay between 40 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius. Along with rising temperatures, the capital will also see strong winds blowing at speeds of 15-25 kmph. While these winds are common during the pre-monsoon season, they may offer only limited relief from the heat.
Major move by Ghaziabad administration
In view of the health and well-being of children arising from the prevailing extreme temperatures (heatwave) and heatwave conditions within the district, the District Magistrate has issued a change in the school timing. The school timings for all students from Nursery to Class 8 schools operating timing within the district are changed to 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM, effective from April 27, 2026, until further notice.
