New Delhi: Dolby Laboratories has expanded its premium cinema footprint in India with the launch of Tamil Nadu’s first Dolby Cinema in Thiruverumbur, Trichy.
The new auditorium, developed in partnership with LA Cinema, signals a shift in how high-end cinema formats are moving beyond metro cities into regional markets.
The screen will open to the public on April 24, 2026, with the film Michael set to be showcased in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. This marks the fourth Dolby Cinema in India and reflects rising demand for advanced viewing experiences outside traditional urban hubs.
Dolby Cinema enters Tamil Nadu with Trichy launch
The new facility is located within LA Cinema’s six-screen multiplex in Thiruverumbur, which houses 1,520 seats in total. A dedicated 456-seat Dolby Cinema auditorium has been designed to deliver Dolby’s flagship viewing experience.
Dolby said the expansion aligns with its strategy to scale premium formats across key cultural markets in India. Sameer Seth, Director, Marketing India at Dolby Laboratories, said, “We are thrilled to bring Dolby Cinema to Tamil Nadu for the very first time. Tamil audiences have a deep-rooted passion for cinema and storytelling, and this launch in Trichy reflects our commitment to delivering the most spectacular and immersive experiences to moviegoers across India.”
Dolby Vision improves picture quality on big screens
Dolby Vision is designed to enhance the visual experience inside theatres. It focuses on brightness, contrast, and colour accuracy to deliver more detailed images.
Viewers can expect better clarity in dark scenes and improved highlights in brighter sequences. The technology also supports a wider colour spectrum, which helps present visuals closer to what filmmakers intend.
Dolby Atmos brings spatial sound experience
Dolby Atmos complements the visual system by adding spatial audio. Instead of limiting sound to traditional channels, it allows audio to move across a three-dimensional space inside the auditorium.
This setup creates a more immersive effect, where sound can be perceived from multiple directions, including overhead. Dialogue clarity and environmental sound design are also enhanced in this format.
Industry sees regional expansion as growth driver
LA Cinema Managing Director Joseph Francis Adaikalaraj said, “Introducing Tamil Nadu’s first Dolby Cinema at LA Cinema is a proud and landmark moment that reflects our legacy of innovation.”
Actor Kamal Haasan, who inaugurated the venue, said, “With Dolby Cinema, that collective experience reaches an entirely new level.”
Dolby noted that more than 860 films globally have been released or are confirmed in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos formats.
