New Delhi: With India’s 80th Independence Day being celebrated tomorrow, commuters of metro trains in Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata will have to pay special
attention. Officials in these cities have announced changes in metro timings, temporary closure of metros and changes in metro lines. While the Delhi Metro will start its service from 4 AM, Dr BR Ambedkar Station and Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru will remain closed for 11.5 hours. Similarly, Kolkata Metro will offer no services on the Orange Line.
Sharing a message on X, the Delhi Metro said, “Metro services commence at 4:00 AM on Independence Day. To facilitate the movement of Special Guests, Invitees, and the general public attending the Independence Day Celebration 2026 on Saturday, 15th August 2026, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will commence metro services from 4:00 AM from all terminal stations across the DMRC network. Metro services will operate at a 30-minute frequency on all lines until the commencement of regular revenue services, as per the scheduled timetable for the day.”
What DMRC say in a statement?
“To ensure seamless travel arrangements for Special Guests and bona fide invitees, DMRC has supplied 1,30,000 special pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence. In addition, invitees carrying valid physical admit cards issued by the Ministry of Defence will be provided with special pre-vended QR tickets at designated metro stations to facilitate their travel,” it added.
Bengaluru and Kolkata Metros release statements
“Entry and exit of passengers at the station will be completely restricted from 10:00 AM to 9:30 PM. During this period, Metro trains will pass through the station without stopping. From 9:30 PM onwards, entry to the station will be permitted to facilitate the dispersal of passengers after the programme. Exit from the station will be permitted until 10:00 PM. Additional Metro train services will be operated as required to manage the increased passenger movement after the programme,” the Bengaluru Metro said in a message on X. In its message, the Kolkata Metro announced changed Independence Day services. It said that the Blue Line will operate 194 metros, even as the Green Line will see 148 services.
