New Delhi: Mirra Andreeva defeated Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the final to win her maiden French Open title on Saturday, June 06. The
Russian teenager produced a dominant display to end Chwalinska’s dream run at Rolland Garros and etch her name in history by achieving a remarkable feat.
Russia’s Andreeva became the first player across men’s and women’s tennis, born after 2005, to win a Grand Slam title. The 19-year-old was born in April 2007. She also became the youngest player to win the French Open women’s singles title since Monica Seles, who was 18 when she won her third straight French Open crown in 1992.
Despite great support for Polish qualifier Chwalinska during the final, a young Andreeva held her nerves and showcased remarkable composure and character to pull off a lop-sided victory in the final. It was a slow start from the Russian teenager, who saw four successive breaks of serve in the first set.
However, she recovered well to close the first set 6-3 and raced to a 5-0 lead with a dominant display in the second set. She was unable to close the game in her first attempt, but eventually closed the set 6-2 to wrap up a straight-set win in an hour and 22 minutes.
The 19-year-old is the first player born after 2007 to win a Grand Slam across men’s and women’s tennis. Coco Gauff, who won her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open in 2023, was born in 2024. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who have been dominating men’s tennis in the last few years, were born in 2003 and 2001, respectively.
