New Delhi: Google is adding new Gemini AI-powered visual creation tools to Google Docs, making it easier for users to generate custom diagrams, infographics
and images without leaving their documents. The new release enhances Gemini’s capabilities within Google Workspace so that users can generate visual representations that align with the content they are composing.
The post on the Google Workspace Updates blog says that Gemini was updated to create and edit visuals directly in Google Docs with natural language prompts. The AI generates context-relevant graphics based on the existing text within the document, rather than using generic photos or external design software.
Gemini can generate and edit visuals inside Docs
Users can access the new feature through the Gemini side panel or the action bar at the bottom of Google Docs. They can request Gemini to sum up a document as an infographic, add diagrams to clarify proposals, or even create visuals that correspond to certain sections of a document.
Google also announced that users can also make edits to AI-generated graphics using simple prompting. For instance, they can alter the aspect ratio, tweak the design style or fine-tune the layout more in tune with the remainder of the document. To save time in manual design, Gemini also enables designers to make multiple visuals in a single request in long documents.
AI creates visuals using document context
Unlike common image tools, Gemini reads the surrounding text prior to creating graphics. This makes it easy to produce illustrations and infographics that are relevant to the document’s content and are cohesive in style. The feature is meant to make people more productive by eliminating the need to switch from Docs to other design platforms, Google explains.
Rollout begins for eligible Workspace users
Google says the feature is included in the web app of Google Docs and will be off by default unless Workspace smart features are activated. The rollout began on July 28 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains and will be fully available within 15 days.
The new visual generation tools are provided for users of Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra and users who have installed the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. The update is part of Google’s larger initiative to spread more AI-powered productivity tools throughout Workspace, the company said.
