Chennai: North Chennai is poised for a significant recreational upgrade as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development
Corporation (TTDC) prepare to launch boating facilities at the freshly restored Madhavaram and Manali lakes. The project, a long-standing demand from local residents, is slated for completion in time for the Pongal festival.
The initiative follows the successful deepening and cleaning of the 66-acre Madhavaram Lake and the 29-acre Manali Lake, a ₹4.56 crore project executed between June and September 2024.
From Restoration to Recreation
The primary goal of the restoration was to enhance water storage capacity. The excavated soil was strategically used to fortify the lakes’ embankments. Now, with the feasibility study complete and depth tests successful, the focus has shifted to tourism.
The TTDC plans to introduce a fleet of motorboats, pedal boats, and paddle boats, offering a novel experience for families and tourists. “Tests have confirmed sufficient depth for safe operations. This will provide a great recreational experience for the public,” stated a project official.

Developing the Tourist Experience
The transformation extends beyond the water. To ensure visitor comfort and convenience, comprehensive amenities are being installed around both lakes:

Walking & Scenic Pathways: A 750-meter walkway at Madhavaram Lake is already operational, with work underway to extend it to a total of 2.3 kilometers. Manali Lake boasts a nearly finished 1.8-kilometer promenade.

Essential Infrastructure: Lighting, public seating, restrooms, parking, and waiting areas are under development.

Eco-Conscious Measures: To prevent erosion, Vetiver grass has been planted along Madhavaram’s embankments. Shutter gates have also been installed on inlet channels to block sewage, ensuring cleaner water year-round.
Meeting Community Hopes and Needs
The project has ignited excitement and further expectations within the community. T.K. Shanmugam, President of the North Chennai Residents’ Welfare Associations Federation, highlighted the lakes’ dual potential. “The stored water can aid in addressing local drinking water shortages,” he noted, also suggesting that renovated canals like the Buckingham Canal could host similar boating facilities.
Officials have also hinted at the potential for expanding boat rides to Ernavoor Lake, signalling a broader vision for water-based tourism in the region.
