New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to launch the state government’s one-gram gold ring scheme for newborns in Madurai on Monday,
September 28. The scheme, called the ‘Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’, will provide gold rings to eligible babies born in government hospitals.
The launch will take place at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, according to the latest reports. It will also mark Vijay’s first reported official engagement in Madurai since taking charge as Chief Minister.
Under the scheme, children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026, will be eligible for a one-gram gold ring. The Tamil Nadu government has procured 1.28 lakh rings for the first phase of the programme.
Who will get gold rings under scheme?
The scheme is open to mothers who are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and have registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system and obtained a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID.
Each ring will carry a unique serial number and will be supplied in tamper-proof packaging, according to the state government.
To clear the backlog of babies born between June 22 and the launch date, the rings will be distributed through 107 hubs across Tamil Nadu. The distribution is scheduled to begin on September 28, with 100 babies covered each day at every hub.
Gold ring to be given before discharge
From the launch date onwards, babies born in government hospitals will receive the gold ring before leaving the hospital.
The state government said the scheme is intended to honour newborns while reflecting the Tamil cultural tradition of ‘Thaaimaman Seer’. It is also aimed at strengthening public confidence in government healthcare services and encouraging institutional deliveries.
The government has said the initiative will also support its broader focus on maternal and child health and demonstrate its commitment to child welfare.
The scheme was originally scheduled to be launched on September 15 but was postponed. The government subsequently announced September 28 as the new launch date.
