New Delhi: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner knocked out of the French Open after losing 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 to the 56th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina
in the second round on Thursday, May 28. He was the overwhelming favourite to lift the French Open trophy following the absence of his arch-rival, Carlos Alcaraz, due to injury, but surrendered a two-set lead.
He was in sensational form heading into the Roland Garros, and had joined Novak Djokovic as the only players to win all nine ATP Masters tournaments by clinching the Italian Open title for a record sixth consecutive ATP Masters title less than two weeks ago.
Sinner opened his French Open campaign with a straight-set victory against French wild card Clement Tabur on May 26. He took a two-set lead against Argentina’s Cerundolo, but struggled in the heat, allowing his opponent to come from behind and seal the match.
