New Delhi: Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered another major health scare on the football pitch as he collapsed during his side’s friendly game
against Ukraine on Sunday. Eriksen collapsed and went unconscious while playing, leading to the match being stopped before getting called off.
The incident took place in the 65th minute of the game. The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder was surrounded by his teammates after collapsing on the pitch. The 34-year-old received immediate medical attention on the pitch and was able to walk from the field.
His sudden collapse in the game revived the harrowing memories of the shocking incident that took place in Euro 2020. Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark in their tournament opener against Finland in Copenhagen in June 2021. He collapsed on the pitch after appearing to have clutched his chest and needed life-saving treatment to be revived before being taken to a hospital.
Eriksen was given CPR, and his heart was restarted using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The swift medical intervention was credited with saving his life at the time. His cardiac arrest raised doubts over his future as a footballer, but Eriksen made a strong comeback.
He returned to action for Premier League club Brentford in 2022 before joining Manchester United. He left United last year to join VFL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga in Germany. Eriksen’s return to football was made possible after an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) – a device used for detecting and correcting irregular heart rhythms was fitted in his body post his cardiac arrest in 2021.
On Sunday, June 07, it was the second time that Eriksen collapsed on a football pitch, sparking concerns regarding his health. However, the Danish Football Association provided a positive update on the midfielder’s health after the friendly between Denmark and Ukraine was cancelled.
Denmark provides update on Christian Eriksen
Denmark’s national team doctor, Morten Boesen, said Eriksen regained consciousness quickly after he collapsed on the ground during the game. He said the midfielder was doing well and that he will undergo further medical examinations to determine the cause of the incident, which once again left the football world in shock.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” said Denmark’s national team doctor Boesen.
“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident,” he added.
