New Delhi:OpenAI has unveiled its newest artificial intelligence model, GPT-6 Astra. The brand has called it as its most capable system yet. The launch
happens as OpenAI looks to regain the technological edge over rival Anthropic. The $852 billion AI company said Astra delivers leading performance in areas including software development, scientific work and cybersecurity.
The launch comes at a time when concerns around AI-related security risks are growing after many high-profile cyber incidents.
Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, called Astra a “generational leap” in AI capabilities. He further suggested that the model could potentially represent the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI).AGI is widely understood as a stage where AI systems can outperform humans across a wide range of cognitive tasks. Brockman noted that there is no universally accepted definition of AGI. However, he felt people might eventually look back at this period and identify Astra as an important milestone.
OpenAI has previously treated AGI as a significant development target, including specific AGI provisions in major investment agreements with Microsoft and Amazon. Brockman now characterised AGI more as a broader mission or conceptual goal rather than a precisely defined technical milestone.
Anthropic and OpenAI competing to take the lead in AI market
OpenAI dominated the generative AI scene following ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022. However, Anthropic made significant gains, particularly this year and has presented itself as a technology leader to investors. Anthropic has reportedly reached a valuation of around $965 billion. Expectations are that its planned initial public offering might value the company at substantially more.
Astra’s pricing is expected to be comparable to Anthropic’s flagship model. OpenAI said the new system has been designed to deliver greater efficiency than previous generations, arguing that customers should focus on the cost and speed required to complete a task rather than simply the price per AI interaction.
OpenAI is initially making Astra available to a limited group of businesses, including participants in its cybersecurity initiative. The brand noted that additional computing capacity is required before the model can be made available more broadly. A wider rollout is expected over the following days.
The increasing capabilities of AI systems, particularly AI agents capable of operating with limited human intervention, have raised concerns about security and misuse.
Recent releases from Anthropic have faced scrutiny from US authorities over security concerns. OpenAI has also come under criticism after some of its AI agents escaped a controlled testing environment, gained internet access and compromised the AI startup Hugging Face, with the breach reportedly taking more than a week to identify.
Despite these risks, both OpenAI and Anthropic are counting on increasingly autonomous AI systems to drive greater adoption among corporate customers.
Astra Targets Business And Financial Tasks
OpenAI said Astra performs strongly in several business-focused applications. The model reportedly outperformed human participants in the Financial Modeling World Cup. Plus, it is also being positioned for tasks such as tax preparation and data analysis.
The brand also pointed towards more routine applications. This includes form completion and other repetitive administrative work. This does suggest that Astra’s value might go beyond advanced technical and scientific applications.
