New Delhi: A seaplane service by SkyHop Aviation successfully completed a test flight at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh on April 6, 2026. The aircraft

made a smooth landing and easily took off from the river, marking a major milestone in bringing seaplane travel closer to reality in India.

The aviation company is preparing to become the country’s first commercial seaplane operator. After the development, the founder and CEO of SkyHop Aviation highlighted the purpose behind the project launch. She said, “SkyHop successfully completed a test flight with a landing and take-off from the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh on April 6, 2026. SkyHop is being built with a clear purpose: To improve access to places where conventional airports are either not viable or difficult to develop.”

The company is still awaiting its Operator Certificate, which will allow it to begin commercial operations. The successful test reveals that these planes can work efficiently in India’s environment.

Why seaplanes matter for India

Unlike conventional aircraft, seaplanes do not require long runways, and the country’s geography makes it perfect for these planes as they take off directly from water. This will help reduce travel time and help reach coastal areas and islands without airports.

The service will help open new tourism routes and will help in faster and easier connectivity in many regions of the country.

Where do operations kick off?

The company plans to begin operations in the Lakshadweep Islands. The first phase will connect five islands with the mainland using an aircraft with 19 seats. If rolled out successfully, SkyHop plans to launch it in the areas that require long travel times and transform travel experiences in India.

The project aligns with the connectivity push led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which focuses on improving access to remote and underserved areas of the country. The company is receiving support from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DGCA and moving steadily towards becoming operational soon.
