Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark 25 years as the head of a government on October 7, completing a political journey that began with his appointment
as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001. Over the period, infrastructure has remained a major part of the development agenda of governments led by him.
As the milestone is marked, several large transport and connectivity projects across India highlight the scale of infrastructure development undertaken in recent years.
Bengaluru’s green terminal
Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2 in Bengaluru, opened in November 2022, expanded the airport’s annual passenger capacity significantly. The terminal incorporates extensive green walls, hanging gardens and outdoor landscaping and operates using renewable energy.
A 108-foot bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda stands near the terminal, forming another prominent feature of the airport complex.
Guwahati gets new terminal
The new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati was inaugurated in December 2025. The facility substantially expanded the airport’s passenger-handling capacity and features a large terminal building incorporating bamboo and nature-themed design elements.
The project uses the concept of a ‘Sky Forest’, with indigenous plants incorporated into the terminal’s design.
Jewar opens aviation door
Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh was inaugurated in March 2026 after an investment of around Rs 11,200 crore in its first phase. The airport has an initial passenger-handling capacity of 12 million annually, with plans for substantial expansion in later stages.
The project is also planned as a multi-modal transport hub, connecting air travel with road, rail, metro and regional transit networks.
Vizhinjam boosts shipping
Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport was inaugurated in May 2025. The deep-water facility is designed to handle large container ships and has been described by the government as India’s first dedicated container trans-shipment port.
Kochi takes to waterways
Kochi Water Metro, which began commercial operations in 2023, is designed to connect island communities with the mainland through an electric and hybrid boat network. The project envisages 15 routes, 38 terminals and connections across 10 islands.
Namo Bharat links NCR
The 82.15-km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor became fully operational in February 2026. India’s first RRTS corridor is designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph and links Delhi with major urban centres in Uttar Pradesh.
Varanasi expands waterways
Namo Ghat in Varanasi was inaugurated in November 2024, adding public facilities and riverfront infrastructure. Nearby, the Varanasi Multi-Modal Terminal on National Waterway-1 has been developed to move cargo through the Ganga, supporting the wider push towards inland waterways.
