New Delhi: Iran on Friday rejected Trump’s claim of talks having reached the ‘highest leadership’ and he having cancelled strikes on the country. Tehran
said that they were yet to make a final decision on a possible agreement with the US, and added that the country will not compromise on its “red lines” in negotiations.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei was quoted by Reuters as saying that reports regarding a time and place of signing the agreement remained speculative and that nothing had been finalized. He further claimed that a large part of the negotiation text had been finalised but the US repeatedly changed its position during talks.
US President Donald Trump’s claim on ending war with Iran
Meanwhile, the US President, Donald Trump had claimed just hours earlier that a deal with Iran to end the war, was nearly complete. He had even said that the final deal would be signed over the weekend in Europe.
The remarks from Trump came at the Oval Office on Thursday. This was hours after he called off a planned military strike on Iran and also backtracked on his threat of taking control of the country’s oil industry. Having called off strikes, Trump said that his deputy, JD Vance would be signing the agreement with Tehran, “over the weekend” in one of the European countries.
Trump said, “We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran. The documents are in pretty final shape, so we’ll see. It should be done pretty quickly.” The US President further said that Iran had agreed to not have a nuclear weapon or purchase one.
He said that the deal would ensure that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. This he also said was the central objective of the administration’s pressure campaign against Tehran. He added that the Strait of Hormuz would open, once the agreement with Iran is signed.
Now, Tehran however, has categorically rejected all claims made by Trump. It now remains to be seen how the ongoing war shapes the situation in the world in general and the Middle East in particular.
