New Delhi: In a major decision for West Bengal’s school education system, the state government announced a phased overhaul of the entire school syllabus
starting from Class 1. Addressing a press conference, State School Education Minister Deepak Barman stated that a newly formed syllabus committee is reviewing the curriculum to align it with modern educational requirements.
Students across the state will receive revised textbooks under the updated curriculum starting in 2027. This initiative precedes the full implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) scheduled for 2028, which will bring further structural changes to textbooks and teaching methods from Class 1 onwards.
Key highlights of the syllabus overhaul
• Phased roadmap: The syllabus review committee will finalize its first set of recommendations for textbooks releasing in 2027.
• NEP alignment by 2028: Starting in 2028, a comprehensive curriculum framework aligned directly with the National Education Policy will take effect.
• Modernisation focus: The review aims to update learning materials, making them relevant to contemporary learning standards and long-term academic goals.
“A review committee has been set up to structure a syllabus suited for today’s needs,” stated Education Minister Deepak Barman. “The committee’s immediate plan is to review textbooks releasing in 2027. Following that, a new syllabus aligned with the National Education Policy will be introduced in 2028 based on the committee’s final recommendations.”
Broader school reforms and uniform changes
The government has also introduced several structural changes across state schools:
• Removal of ‘Biswa Bangla’ logo: The state has decided to discontinue the use of the Biswa Bangla logo on official school uniforms.
• School uniform autonomy: Replacing the uniform blue color scheme, individual schools will now have the autonomy to select their own uniform colors to restore traditional school identities.
