New Delhi: WhatsApp banned 54,70,958 accounts in India during April 2026, according to its latest monthly report published on June 1 under the Information
Technology Rules, 2021. The report covers action taken between April 1 and April 30, 2026.
The Meta-owned messaging platform said 13,47,995 of these accounts were banned proactively, before any user report came in. Not just waiting for users to file complaints, WhatsApp is using detection systems to catch suspicious behaviour early, especially on accounts linked to Indian +91 phone numbers.

WhatsApp bans over 54 lakh accounts in India in April 2026
The April report shows how large the safety challenge has become for one of India’s most used messaging apps. With families, small businesses, housing societies, schools and even local shopkeepers using WhatsApp daily, spam and abuse can spread very quickly.
The company said it focuses on prevention, adding that “it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred.”

User complaints crossed 19,000 in April
WhatsApp received 19,189 grievance reports from users in India during April. Out of these, 486 accounts were actioned after review.
The biggest chunk came from ban appeals, with 9,421 reports. Other support cases stood at 9,103. Account support had 363 reports, product support had 91, and safety-related grievances stood at 211.
The report also said WhatsApp received 25 orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) during April 2026. It complied with all 25 orders.
