Mumbai: The BSE Sensex dropped 125.48 points to 85,314.13 on Tuesday. The NSE Nifty traded flat at 26,244.55. The benchmark indices declined as investors
resorted to selling in blue-chips including Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and worries over fresh warning from the US to further raise tariffs against India.
Surprisingly, Trent went down 7 per cent even as the Tata group retail company reported a 17 per cent growth in standalone revenue to Rs 5,220 crore in the December quarter.
Other Major laggards from the Sensex pack: Eternal, HDFC Bank, Adani Ports, Reliance Industries, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. Gainers included, Asian Paints, and Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, and Bajaj Finserv.
Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 36.25 crore on 5th January, while Domestic institutional investors pumped in Rs 1,764.07 crore to buy stocks.
Market investors’ sentiments guarded
“While broader sentiment remains guarded amid recent bouts of volatility driven by geopolitical developments and tariff-related concerns, underlying support continues to come from stable domestic macro fundamentals and steady institutional participation,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, told PTI.
Higher tariffs warning for India
US President Donald Trump has threatened to levy higher tariffs on India if the latter continues to purchase oil from Russia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi knew “I was not happy” with India’s purchases of Russian oil and that Washington could raise tariffs on New Delhi “very quickly”, Trump said.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index, and South Korea’s Kospi index traded in positive zone. The US stock markets settle higher on Monday. The Brent crude went down 0.24 per cent to USD 61.61 per barrel.
On January 5, 2026, the BSE Sensex dropped 322.39 points to finish at 85,439.62. The 50-share Nifty recorded record an intra-day high of 26,373.20, however, the index failed to carry forward the momentum and declined 78.25 points to settle at 26,250.30.
