New Delhi: Patna Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh has gained global attention after being declared a Ramsar wetland on January 31. Announced by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, the recognition places the sanctuary among India’s 98 internationally important wetlands. Located in the Etah district, the site plays a vital role in biodiversity conservation with 178 recorded bird species and 252 plant species. Despite its modest size, the sanctuary supports large seasonal bird populations and thriving wetland ecology.
Spread across just one square kilometre, Patna Bird Sanctuary is the smallest wildlife sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1991, it proves that size does not limit ecological value. Northern Pintail remains the most dominant migratory bird, outnumbering others by a wide margin.

The sanctuary records over 180 bird species including Comb Duck, Cotton Teal, Lesser Whistling Duck, and Spot-billed Duck. Alongside avian life, the ecosystem supports over 252 plant species and wildlife such as nilgai, jackals, and wild cats, making it a complete wetland habitat despite its limited area.
