Mumbai: The BSE Sensex jumped 311.11 points to 85,499.71 on January 2, 2026, Friday. The NSE Nifty gained 94.75 points to 26,241.30. The benchmark indices
went up as steady buying was seen from domestic institutional investors and a rally in blue-chip Reliance Industries.
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 3,268.60 crore on December 31, 2025. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) pumped in Rs 1,525.89 crore to purchase stocks.
Bharat Electronics, NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Asian Paints, Maruti, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Reliance Industries, and Bajaj Finance were among the biggest gainers from the Sensex pack.
Laggards included, HCL Tech, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ITC, and Titan Company.
“Steady domestic institutional inflows continue to provide broader support, helping offset aggressive selling by foreign investors,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, told PTI.
Shanghai’s SSE Composite index, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index and South Korea’s Kospi index traded in positive territory. The US stock markets settled on Thursday for the New Year’s Day holiday. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, appreciated 0.46 per cent to USD 61.13 per barrel.
On 31 December 2025, the 30-share BSE barometer marginally went down 32 points to close at 85,188.60. The Nifty gained marginally by 16.95 points to finish at 26,146.55.
