New Delhi: The NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially started its ambitious 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), marking a major milestone
in modern astronomy. The observatory will observe the sky from Cerro Pachón, in Chile, taking ultra-detailed pictures of the southern sky every 40 seconds, creating what scientists describe as the most comprehensive time-lapse record of the universe ever made.
The survey will revolutionise the study of all sorts of objects, including asteroids, supernovas, dark matter and dark energy. According to the observatory, the powerful telescope and its 3,200-megapixel camera will repeatedly scan the entire southern sky over the next decade, allowing researchers to track changes across the cosmos with unmatched precision.
A decade-long mission to map the changing universe
The Rubin Observatory is a large digital camera and a large light-collecting telescope that can take a new image every 40 seconds. Scientists will make more than 800 observations of the same regions of the sky over the next 10 years, looking for subtle changes in objects, rare cosmic events and faint objects that aren’t visible in traditional observations.
The project has finished extensive system testing, performance reviews and scientific validation and has officially started full scientific operations, according to the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The observatory is following up on its successful “First Look” event that was organised in June 2025.
Millions of discoveries expected every night
The observatory is hoped to be one of the most productive astronomical facilities in the world. It will gather almost 10 terabytes of data every night and produce up to seven million automated alerts when it detects changes in the sky. These alerts will facilitate rapid identification of supernovae, black holes, variable stars and other transient phenomena of the Universe for follow-up observations.
Rubin will also be revolutionising research on the solar system. The observatory was able to discover over 11,000 new asteroids during the early commissioning period (ECP), including dozens of near-Earth asteroids and hundreds of distant trans-Neptunian objects.
Unlocking the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy
One of the mission’s most ambitious science objectives is to address two of the universe’s greatest mysteries: dark matter and dark energy. Scientists will also be investigating galaxy evolution, charting the Milky Way in detail like never before and assisting in multi-messenger astronomy, helping observatories globally respond quickly to cosmic events.
The survey is the result of years of scientific cooperation and technological advances, officials from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy said. Completion of the LSST database will result in billions of celestial objects and trillions of measurements, with regular public data releases anticipated that will enable astronomers from around the world and citizen scientists to use the data.
