New Delhi: The new iX3 marks a big move for BMW in terms of design, but that won’t be something that will prevail with all BMW cars. Even though most models
from Munich will have Neue Klasse design elements in the upcoming years, the 7 Series won’t be one of them.
The luxury saloon is getting a mid-cycle facelift, and by the looks of the teaser image, it will be more of an evolutionary look. BMW has given us an early glimpse of their updated flagship before the 2027 7-Series, as it breaks cover next month. We are going to see the Mercedes S-Class rival arrive at the Beijing Auto Show, which might be perfect since Chinese customers are quite mesmerised by the big saloons.
Even though the car’s details can barely be seen, it is evident that the front design won’t change a lot as compared to the present model, which has been in the market for four years now.
The grille’s LED contour clearly shows that the XXL-sized kidneys are staying. It is an interesting perspective given that the i3 looks completely different. The smaller EV saloon, and by extension the next-gen 3 Series, will come with a wide, flat grille merging with the headlights. That isn’t obviously the scenario for the 7 Series, which retains many of the design elements from the current generation.

The upper strip of LED daytime running light appears flatter than it was before and sits above the main headlights. This look isn’t going anywhere any time soon, as the X7 coming in 2027 will come with a similar look.
BMW usually is more daring with the design of its largest vehicles, and that can be said for the XM as well. The iX doesn’t get split headlights, but it was the first to come with the gargantuan grille when it debuted in 2021.
Even though Mercedes has noted that their S-Cass facelift is 50 per cent newer, BMW is going one step ahead. The 2027 7-Series is an “almost new” vehicle, as per CEO Oliver Zipse. Coming in the second of their seventh generation, the 7-Series will no longer have Audi A8 and Lexus LS as competition, as both are making their exit.
Even though the boffins at BMW say that the luxury saloon is a completely new car in terms of looks and technology, the image from the teaser suggests otherwise. The cabin is likely to go through a big change, and it might happen that the iX3’s interior comes in the 7-Series as well, likely with a touch of more premiumness and high-end specs, due to the car’s range-topping segment status.
