New Delhi: After months of negotiation, Lionel Messi has agreed on a contract extension with Inter Miami that will keep him at the Major League Soccer
side till 2028.
On Thursday, the deal was announced that keeps the Argentine icon with the American side till their planned move into a new stadium next year.
“HE’S HOME,” Miami said in a video posted on social media where Messi could be seen signing the contract inside the new stadium that remains under construction.
“To enjoy him, watching him enjoy doing the things he is doing, he’s very, very competitive and he tries to translate that to the team,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said Thursday.
“The best way to help him is trying to do the right things … he has to be comfortable on the pitch. He’s comfortable when things are working in the right way. With him, when we do things the right way, we’ll have many chances to have success.”

Messi scored 29 goals to win MLS’ Golden Boot this season, five more than his nearest competitors and made 19 assists. His goal contributions of 48 was one less than the MLS record of 49 set by Carlos Vela in 2019.

This season, Messi scored a brace in five consecutive games, making him the first player to achieve the feat in the league. The predominantly left footed Messi had 10 multi-goal games, another league record.
The 38-year-old made debut with Spanish giants Barcelona in 2004, when he was only 17. He joined Miami in July 2023 on a two-and-half-year contract in a deal worth an estimated $150 million at the time.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and it is not clear how long he will continue to play for his country as they prepare to defend the trophy next year.
