New Delhi: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday appeared in the Calcutta High Court. She was wearing a lawyer’s robe and had reached
the court in order to argue a case related to post-poll violence in West Bengal. The case relates to the violence that gripped West Bengal, after her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) lost the Assembly Elections.
The case was filed by Shirshanya Bandopadhyay, the son of senior TMC leader and advocate Kalyan Bandopadhyay. This case is related to attacks on TMC workers and party offices in the state, following the defeat of the party in the state and the end of 15 years of rule by Mamata Banerjee.
‘This is not a bulldozer state’: Mamata Banerjee
Appearing in court, Banerjee paid her respects to the judges in court. She said that it was for the first time that she was appearing in the High Court as a lawyer to fight a case. During the hearing she appealed to the court to provide urgent protection to the affected residents.
During her arguments in court, the former CM said that “even children are not spared, women are not spared, minorities are not spared.” She further highlighted that people across communities were forced to flee their homes, including a 92-year-old who was forced to leave after her house was ransacked. She presented in court, a list of 10 people who died during the clashes.
The TMC boss said that out of the 10 who were killed 6 were Hindus. She then went on to allege that the police were not allowing FIRs to be filed in these deaths.
She then appealed to the High Court bench, “Please protect the people of Bengal. This is not a bulldozer state.” She then went on to question the law enforcement agencies and asked, “Is the police sleeping?” She wanted to know what the police personnel were doing when the shops and houses were being destroyed after the election results were announced in the state.
In her concluding remarks, she said, “Police should prevent crime. After something has happened, they will not investigate?”
Before her appearance in court, the TMC’s official ‘X’ handle put out a post praising Banerjee’s commitment to the people of West Bengal. They said, “Our honourable chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, personally reached the Calcutta High Court today to argue in a matter concerning the widespread post-poll violence unleashed across Bengal by BJP.”

The post further said, “She NEVER abandons the people of Bengal in their hour of need. She NEVER stops fighting for truth, justice, and constitutional values.
And time and again, she rises above the politics of hatred with unmatched COMPASSION, COURAGE and CONVICTION.”
