New Delhi: Delhi Police have suspended constable Deepak Bangar after he allegedly posted Instagram videos that exposed details of a rooftop sniper position
during the 18th BRICS Summit.
Senior officers removed Bangar from the security assignment after the videos went viral and drew criticism online. The department sent him back to his home district and ordered an inquiry into the alleged security and disciplinary lapse. Bangar serves with the Foreigners Cell in the Northwest district of Delhi Police. Authorities had temporarily assigned him to VVIP security duty during the summit.

Rooftop sniper duty
India hosted the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian were among the leaders who attended the event.
Security agencies deployed extensive arrangements across the national capital to protect the visiting leaders and their delegations.Bangar became part of an overwatch team that included snipers and spotters positioned at elevated locations. Authorities assigned him to the terrace of a five-star hotel in central Delhi where foreign delegates stayed. He also received an official BRICS Summit 2026 identity card.
Videos reveal position
At least two videos from Bangar’s personal Instagram account surfaced online. Some reports said he had posted a third clip as well. One daytime video reportedly showed Bangar in civilian clothes with his summit identity card visible. He lifted his shirt to display a service pistol holstered at his waist, while the surroundings of the hotel appeared in the background.
Another video showed him looking through the scope of a sniper rifle and aiming from the terrace. Nearby buildings, including structures used for VVIP purposes, were also visible. A separate clip reportedly captured other security personnel and their equipment. It also showed a colleague using binoculars as the camera moved across the rooftop.
Inquiry ordered
The footage caused concern because it revealed the location, layout and sightlines of an active sniper post. It also showed the personnel, weapons and equipment deployed there. Social media users identified the location and questioned why a police officer had disclosed sensitive operational details during an international summit.
The viral circulation brought the videos to the attention of senior Delhi Police officers. The force then removed Bangar from duty and suspended him with immediate effect. A senior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Delhi Police had taken serious note of the lapse. The departmental inquiry will examine how Bangar recorded and uploaded the videos. Authorities could take further disciplinary action based on its findings.
