Mumbai: With Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra under the grip of Monsoon, as many as seven reservoirs supplying water in the state capital has plunged
into around 9 percent of their total capacity as on June 20, as per the data released by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Notably, even as the monsoon rains have yet to be collected by authorities, Mumbai’s total live storage stood at around 130,275 million litres out of the total capacity of 1,447,363 million litres. The shortage of water has raised concerns about Mumbai’s water security in the coming days. The seven reservoirs which supply water to Mumbai are- Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Bhatsa, Tulsi, Modak Sagar and Vihar.
Which reservoir supply water in Mumbai?
The said reservoirs are situated in different districts of the state, including Mumbai, Thane and Nashik. Among these reservoirs, Upper Vaitarna has the storage capability of 227,047 million litres. However, now it is almost empty. Among other reservoirs, Tansa only has 5,015 million litres of water remaining. This meant that it only had 3.46% of its 145,080 million-litre capacity, NDTV report said.
Bhatsa, the largest reservoir, from where Mumbai gets its water, has just 59,518 million litres of water as compared to 717,037 million litres. Middle Vaitarna currently has around 20,008 million litres of water in storage, which means 10.34 percent of the total capacity of 193,530 million litres. However, Vihara has the highest storage of water for Mumbai. It has around 41.44 percent of water, meaning 11,478 million litres of water in compared to the total capacity of 27,698 million litres.
