New Delhi: A recent test involving an AI detection tool has raised fresh doubts about the reliability of such systems. The platform, ZeroGPT, reportedly
flagged a portion of Jawaharlal Nehru’s historic 1947 speech, “Tryst with Destiny”, as AI-generated. It was a speech given on the eve of Indian independence, and it is one of the most documented and researched texts in modern history.
The excerpt analysed included references to India’s transition to freedom and the symbolic “midnight hour”. Although it has a definite historical background, the detector gave a high probability score that indicated a machine-generated material. The result has brought about a new debate on the extent to which AI tools can determine authorship.
Why did the tool misclassify the speech?
The patterns used by AI detection systems are usually sentence structure, consistency, and grammatical accuracy. Very polished and highly structured text might appear similar to statistical patterns of writing generated by AI. Nehru’s speech, known for its clarity and rhythm, appears to have triggered these signals.
This represents a major weakness. The instruments do not assess historical environment and purpose. Rather, they concentrate on language patterns. Consequently, human writings that are written well may be confused with AI writing.
Not an isolated incident
This is not the only case of this problem. Other historic documents have been misclassified using similar detection tools in the past. It has been reported that even texts such as the United States Constitution have been claimed to be generated by AI in case of experimental tests.
Elsewhere, the probability of the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln as AI-written was rated at 96.21%. Such findings indicate that the issue is endemic and not mishandled.
Experts point to structural bias
The controversy was further fuelled by a LinkedIn article by Yu-kai Chou that pointed out the weakness. He observed that AI detectors fail to distinguish intentional and high-quality human writing and machine-generated text. To him, these tools lay more emphasis on structure rather than on meaning, authorship, or historical background.
His observations have been greatly disseminated, particularly among professionals and educators who use such tools to verify.
The majority of AI detection platforms do not imply unequivocality of their findings but rather indicate probabilistic nature. But in practice, these scores can be taken as judgements. This poses dangers, especially in learning and working environments.
The incident with the Nehru speech supports a larger issue. The AI detectors will still be misclassifying historical and current writings without the contextual knowledge. With the increase in dependency on such tools, concerns regarding the accuracy and fairness of the same are becoming more difficult to look over the shoulder of.
