Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a temporary halt in fighting with Russia as senior US envoys prepare for diplomatic meetings in Moscow
and Kyiv this weekend.
Zelenskyy proposed suspending Ukrainian air strikes for the period required to hold the talks and complete arrangements linked to the visit of US President Donald Trump’s representatives.
“There will be no air strikes from our side, and Russia must mirror this by ensuring silence without its air strikes for the time needed to hold these negotiations and resolve the logistical issues associated with this American visit,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are expected to travel to Moscow on Saturday before heading to Kyiv on Sunday.
Their meetings are aimed at exploring possible terms for ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for four-and-a-half years.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian diplomats had been working on preparations for the American delegation’s arrival in Kyiv.
