Noida: As violent labor unrest gripped Noida’s industrial belt for a second consecutive day, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has come out in full support
of the protesting factory workers, describing their struggle as the “final cry” of a workforce pushed to the brink.
Championing their demand for a minimum monthly salary of Rs 20,000, Gandhi criticised the widening gap between stagnant wages and “runaway inflation,” asserting that those who build the nation have been reduced to a “burden” by the current government.

“Truth of ‘Developed India”
In a scathing post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi broke down the dire financial reality of a typical Noida laborer. He pointed out that while a worker earns roughly Rs 12,000 a month, rent alone consumes Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000.
“By the time he gets a Rs 300 annual raise, the landlord hikes the rent by Rs 500,” Gandhi wrote, calling this cycle the “truth of ‘Developed India’.” He highlighted the desperation caused by the gas crisis, mentioning reports of workers paying up to Rs 5,000 for a cylinder or buying LPG on the black market for Rs 400 per kg just to keep their stoves lit.
Cronyism vs the daily wager
Without naming names, Gandhi took a swipe at top industrialists, widely perceived as close associates of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that while global supply chains have snapped due to conflicts in West Asia and US tariff wars, the elite remain insulated.
“The burden hasn’t fallen on Modi ji’s ‘friendly’ industrialists. The hardest hit is the daily-wage worker who eats only when he earns,” Gandhi said. He further slammed the implementation of the four new Labor Codes starting November 2025, which allow for grueling 12-hour workdays. “The worker who stands for 12 hours every day, yet still takes loans for school fees—is his demand unreasonable?”
The Noida protest
The protests, which turned violent on Monday after simmering since Friday, stem from a massive disparity in wages across state lines. Workers pointed out that the Haryana government recently hiked minimum wages by 35 per cent (approx. Rs 580–Rs 750 daily). In contrast, unskilled workers in Noida are struggling on a mere Rs 350–Rs 435 per day.
What are their demands
The protesting workers demand a minimum monthly salary of Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000 (rejecting current Rs 250–Rs 350 annual increments). They also demand double pay for all extra hours worked including mandatory weekly offs, comprehensive medical coverage, and timely bonus payments.
Noida Police releases video appeal
The industrial belt remains Tense. While thousands of workers from dozens of units have joined the strike, the Noida Police have stepped up surveillance. DCP Central Noida issued a video appeal on April 14 regarding the ongoing dharna, urging for calm as the city grapples with its most significant labor disruption in recent months.

“To maintain law and order, sufficient police force and senior officers have been deployed at various sites. Cleo County, Gari Chaukhandi, Sector-121, Sector-70—the incident site is the same, where domestic aides (maids) working in homes had staged a protest to demand an increase in their wages; the situation is completely peaceful, and law and order is established.” DCP said in a video message.
