New Delhi: An exceptionally intense ‘Super’ El Nino event is likely to emerge imminently, threatening to disrupt global weather patterns over the next
few months. Advanced meteorological computer models indicate a rare surge in equatorial Pacific Ocean temperatures, a phenomenon that occurs only about five times every 75 years. The baseline criterion for a standard El Nino involves sea-surface temperatures rising above the historical average every three to four years. The impending event qualifies as a Super El Nino because localised ocean temperatures are projected to exceed the average by more than two degrees Celsius.
The massive thermal shift is expected to alter the atmospheric jet stream, trigger severe environmental anomalies worldwide, ranging from extreme droughts in certain regions to torrential rainfall in others. The atmospheric disruption will directly alter the Atlantic hurricane season by generating high-altitude wind shear. This variation in wind speed and direction at higher altitudes destabilises developing tropical cyclones, tearing their structures apart before they can intensify. Consequently, overall storm forecasts for the basin are tracking slightly below historical averages. The threat to the US is significant. Destructive landfalls are possible in coastal zones such as South Florida.
Impact beyond the Hurricane Season
The phenomenon will fundamentally alter regional winter baselines across the southern United States. The altered climate drivers will shift from storm tracks, bringing increased cloud cover, depressed temperatures and heightened precipitation. Vulnerable regions face a significantly elevated risk of severe winter weather anomalies, including an accelerated tornado season capable of producing larger, more destructive vortices than during standard meteorological cycles. Experts have warned of the most severe El Nino conditions in more than a century is developing, with a massive swell in warm water in the Pacific indicating the emergence of strong El Nino conditions later in the year. At present, weak La Nina conditions are transitioning to ENSO neutral conditions in the Pacific.
