New Delhi: Mumbaikars woke up to heavy overnight rainfall on Wednesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city
and neighbouring districts, warning of moderate to intense spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The weather department had earlier issued a red alert for Mumbai and Palghar at 4 am, valid for three hours, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, intense to very intense rainfall and wind speeds of 40-60 kmph. The alert was downgraded to an orange alert at 7 am for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg districts.
The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday, 13 days later than its normal onset date of June 10, bringing widespread rainfall across the city.

Rainfall data from Mumbai and nearby areas
According to reports, more than 200 mm of rainfall was recorded overnight in several parts of Mumbai between 10 pm on June 23 and 6 am on June 24. Malwani in Malad recorded the highest rainfall at 271 mm, followed by Powai (247 mm), Charkop in Kandivali (244 mm), Borivali (234 mm), Parel (219 mm), Dadar (210 mm) and Vikhroli (210 mm).
Despite the heavy rainfall, major road and rail networks remained largely operational on Wednesday morning. All major subways in the city remained open, while suburban railway services and BEST bus operations continued without significant disruption.
However, rain-related incidents were reported across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai on Tuesday. Waterlogging was reported in areas including Kurar Village in Malad and near the entrance of the APMC Vegetable Market in Navi Mumbai, causing inconvenience to commuters, traders and transport operators.

Tree fall incidents in Dadar
In Dadar’s TT area, a large tree collapsed on a car amid heavy rainfall, severely damaging the vehicle and disrupting traffic on a major road. The driver sustained minor injuries. Fire brigade personnel were deployed to clear the fallen tree and secure exposed power lines in the area.
Another tree fall was reported near the eastern side of Dadar railway station, where a car was damaged. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Heavy rain also affected railway operations on the Trans-Harbour line. Services between Koparkhairane and Turbhe stations were suspended after soil beneath the tracks was washed away due to incessant rainfall. Railway authorities halted services in both directions as a precautionary measure and advised passengers to use alternative modes of transport.
