New Delhi: Siddaramaiah, who resigned as Karnataka Chief Minister on Thursday to clear the way for DK Shivakumar, suggested the formation of a coordination
committee to the Congress high command in Delhi. If formed, this committee is likely to act as a bridge between the party and the government.
The former CM, who was earlier the coordination committee chairman when the party was in power earlier in coalition with JD (U) in 2018, suggested the revival of the same model, which would make him an alternative power centre in Karnataka.
Congress has not agreed to the proposal
According to a report published in India Today, the senior leaders in the Congress, however, have not agreed to the proposal. They believed that the committee would not have to do much in the state as the party enjoyed clear majority in the Assembly.
Notably, Congress reportedly offered him a Rajya Sabha seat and a major role in national politics. He, however, reported having declined the offer, as he wanted to continue in state politics. He met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi along with his son Yathindra on Friday. During the meeting, he is understood to have pushed for the committee.
Is Siddramaaiah seeking a cabinet berth for his son?
As per media reports, Siddaramaiah is also seeking cabinet berths for Yathindra and his loyalists the next government in coming days. The party is officially expected to announce the next chief minister on Saturday after the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting in.
The newly elected CLP leader will stake a claim to form the government. Siddaramaiah was the longest-serving chief minister of Karnataka. He was called in Delhi on Tuesday by the Congress high command, which asked him to step down.
