“I like your Prime Minister a lot. He is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship,” Trump said.
The US President suggested that the strong ties between the two leaders could help facilitate progress on trade issues that have long been under discussion.
US-India trade deal
Trump acknowledged past trade disagreements but expressed confidence that an agreement would eventually be reached.
“For years, India took advantage of the United States. They charged us tremendous tariffs and paid nothing. Now it is the exact reverse and we are making a lot of money with India,” Trump said.
“But we will get to a deal,” he added.
US-India trade deal talks
Trump’s remarks come shortly after four days of trade negotiations between Indian and US officials in New Delhi from June 1 to June 4.
Representatives from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and Indian officials discussed a range of issues, including customs procedures, trade facilitation, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation.
