New Delhi: Delhi’s electric vehicle market is undergoing a major shift, with electric two-wheelers and private electric cars surging to seven-year highs
in the January-May 2026 period, even as e-rickshaw registrations collapsed to their lowest level since 2019, according to data compiled by Envirocatalysts, a research and advisory think tank.
Electric two-wheelers remained the dominant segment, accounting for 51.9% of all EV registrations in the capital during the first five months of the year. Registrations climbed to 20,239 units from 11,939 in the same period last year, a jump of nearly 70% and the highest figure recorded since just 533 units were registered in 2019.
Private electric cars nearly double
Private electric four-wheelers also posted strong growth, with registrations rising to 9,471 in January-May 2026 from 4,832 in the year-ago period, an increase of nearly 96%.
The segment accounted for 24.3% of all EV registrations, making it the second-largest category. This too represents the highest level since 2019, when only 76 private electric cars were registered in Delhi.
E-rickshaw registrations collapse 93%
In sharp contrast, e-rickshaw registrations witnessed a steep decline, plunging to 1,887 units from 25,643 in the same period last year, a drop of 93%. The category now makes up just 4.8% of total EV registrations, a dramatic reversal from 2025, which had recorded the highest e-rickshaw registrations since 2019.
Electric commercial passenger four-wheelers, including app-based cabs and taxis, saw the fastest growth rate among all EV segments, surging 254% to 1,068 units. Electric bus registrations also rose 59% to 858 units.
