New Delhi: The population enumeration phase of India’s census will take place from January 25 to February 28, 2027, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner
announced on Friday. The exercise will cover most states and Union territories, with exceptions for certain regions.
A notification issued by Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan set March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the population count. The reference time will be 00:00 hours on that date.
The notification also set out a self-enumeration window before the house-to-house count and a revisional round after the main enumeration period.
Self-enumeration starts January 10
People will have the option to submit their details through the government’s self-enumeration facility from January 10 to January 24, 2027. This window will remain open before the physical population count begins on January 25. It will give residents an opportunity to provide their information ahead of the house-to-house exercise.
The announced timetable places self-enumeration first, followed by the main population count over the next five weeks. The notification provides separate dates for each stage of the exercise.
Revision round in March
After the main enumeration ends on February 28, officials will conduct a revisional round from March 1 to March 5, 2027. The revision period will begin on the same date that the notification has designated as the reference date for the census. While the main count will span January and February, the notified reference point for the population figures will remain midnight at the start of March 1.
Several regions await dates
The January 25 to February 28 schedule will not apply to Manipur until further orders. Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Ladakh are also outside the announced timeline. The notification additionally excludes the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The exclusion concerns these specified areas rather than the entirety
