New Delhi: Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan shared insights into her creative journey, her growing presence on YouTube and her experience working
on the reality show Lock Upp during a conversation with Prajakta Koli at FICCI.
Speaking about her passion for storytelling, Farah said that keeping audiences entertained has always been an integral part of her personality. Whether directing films, appearing on television or creating digital content, she believes in ensuring that viewers never experience a dull moment.
Recalling her transition to YouTube, the Main Hoon Na director revealed that the platform allowed her to embrace a spontaneous style of content creation. Unlike filmmaking, which involves extensive planning and scripting, her YouTube videos are largely unscripted, with the team simply switching on the camera and allowing conversations to unfold naturally.
Farah also discussed her association with Lock Upp, describing it as a dream opportunity for someone who enjoys watching reality television. She revealed that despite being an avid follower of reality shows, she had never watched Lock Upp before being approached for the project, as she did not have access to the ALTBalaji app.
While the initial phase of the show came with several creative suggestions and differing opinions, Farah said she and Ritesh gradually developed their own styles of presenting it.
Explaining her approach, Farah shared that she wanted to represent the audience’s perspective. Rather than simply observing the contestants, she preferred expressing the reactions and questions viewers might have while following the show. She acknowledged that her comments could occasionally appear biased but believed that speaking her mind was essential to her role.
Farah also praised Ritesh for his contribution to the show, recalling how he would occasionally step in to restrain her when her reactions became particularly animated. Their contrasting approaches, she suggested, made the experience enjoyable.
Reflecting on her time on Lock Upp, Farah described it as one of her most memorable reality television experiences. What particularly appealed to her was the show’s exploration of human behaviour, personal secrets and cultural dynamics, which offered an engaging dimension beyond conventional reality television entertainment.
