New Delhi: The rains may bring relief from the summer heat, but they also usher in one of the most frustrating household battles – clothes that refuse
to dry and end up smelling damp. That familiar musty odour isn’t just unpleasant; it can be a sign that moisture has lingered long enough for mould, mildew and bacteria to thrive. With high humidity slowing evaporation and limited sunshine making outdoor drying difficult, even freshly washed clothes can develop an unpleasant smell within hours. The good news? A few simple changes to the way you wash, dry and store your laundry can make all the difference.
Why do clothes smell worse during the monsoon?
The culprit is humidity. During the rainy season, the air is already saturated with moisture, making it harder for water trapped in fabrics to evaporate. As clothes remain damp for longer periods, bacteria, mould and mildew begin multiplying, creating the characteristic musty smell. Experts say laundry should ideally dry within a few hours; prolonged dampness significantly increases the chances of odour and microbial growth.
Another common mistake is leaving washed clothes sitting in the washing machine for too long. Even a few extra hours can create the perfect environment for mildew to develop, especially in humid weather.
1. Shake each garment before hanging it
Instead of hanging clothes straight from the washing machine, give each garment a vigorous shake. This loosens fabric fibres, removes wrinkles and trapped water, allowing better airflow and faster drying.
2. Turn thick clothes inside out
Jeans, hoodies, sweatshirts and shirts with thick collars should be dried inside out first because seams, waistbands, pockets and collars retain moisture the longest. Once the inside is nearly dry, turn them back the right way.
3. Leave 2-3 inches of space between every garment
One of the biggest mistakes is hanging clothes shoulder-to-shoulder. Even if they’re under a fan, the trapped humidity between garments slows evaporation. Experts recommend leaving a noticeable gap so air circulates around every piece.
4. Dry clothes under a fan before moving them to the wardrobe
Even when clothes feel dry, thick fabrics often retain hidden moisture. Let them sit under a ceiling fan for another 30-60 minutes after drying. This reduces the chance of that “cupboard smell.”
5. Use white vinegar in the rinse cycle—not with detergent
About half a cup of distilled white vinegar in the final rinse helps dissolve detergent residue and neutralise odour-causing bacteria. The vinegar smell disappears once the clothes dry. It should never be mixed directly with bleach.
6. Add oxygen bleach for whites and towels
Unlike chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) helps eliminate odour-causing microbes from towels, socks and bedsheets without damaging most fabrics. It’s particularly useful during prolonged rainy spells.
7. Wash towels separately from clothes
Towels absorb and retain much more moisture than regular clothing. Washing them together can increase lint transfer and slow drying for the entire load, making musty smells more likely.
8. Don’t dry clothes in a closed room
Many people keep windows shut because of rain. This traps humidity indoors. Instead, create cross ventilation by opening windows whenever rain isn’t blowing in, or run an exhaust fan to move moist air outside.
9. Clean the rubber gasket every week
Front-load washing machines often develop mould inside the rubber door seal because water collects in its folds. Even freshly washed clothes can pick up a damp smell if the gasket isn’t wiped dry after every wash.
10. Wash gym wear and synthetic fabrics immediately
Polyester and activewear trap sweat oils more than cotton. During monsoon, waiting even a day before washing allows bacteria to multiply rapidly, making odours harder to remove.
11. Don’t use excess fabric softener
Fabric softeners coat fibres with a thin film that can trap moisture and detergent residue. During humid weather, this coating may contribute to lingering odours, especially in towels and sportswear.
12. Sunlight isn’t the only answer—UV isn’t everything
Many people wait for sunshine, but moving air is actually more important than direct sunlight for drying. A fan plus good ventilation can often dry clothes faster than still air with weak sunlight.
13. Place silica gel or moisture absorbers inside wardrobes
The smell often develops after clothes are stored. Moisture absorbers help keep cupboard humidity low, preventing mould spores from growing on fabrics.
14. Never leave wet clothes in the washing machine overnight
In monsoon, bacteria can start multiplying within a few hours in the warm, damp drum. If you forget a load, it’s often worth running a quick rinse cycle again before drying.
15. Give the wardrobe a weekly “air-out”
Open cupboard doors for 30-60 minutes once a week, preferably during the driest part of the day. This helps release trapped humidity and prevents stale odours from building up.
16. Don’t overload your washing machine
It may seem like an efficient way to tackle the growing laundry pile, but stuffing the washing machine prevents clothes from moving freely. This reduces cleaning efficiency and can leave detergent, dirt and bacteria trapped in fabrics.
17. Ironing can help remove hidden moisture
The heat helps eliminate residual moisture trapped deep within fabrics while also reducing bacteria that may have developed during slow drying. This is particularly useful for cotton shirts, trousers, uniforms and heavier garments that take longer to dry naturally.
