Washington: In a major blow to US President Donald Trump and the Republicans, the Democrats on Wednesday took control of the Senate as well as the House
of Representatives. The defeat of the Republicans, of which Trump is a part, means that Trump might have tough times in the White House during his remaining term.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives went to the polls. Of them, Democrats won 205 seats so far, and Republicans grabbed 123 seats. The House needs 217 seats to reach a majority. In the Senate, out of 100 seats, Democrats have secured 53 seats so far, while Republicans have won 41 seats. The lower House of the US Congress has 51 seats as a majority mark. Notably, Democrats have taken control of Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina in Senate Elections.
Results suggest voter disapproval of Donald Trump
The results suggested a major setback for Trump. The defeat has come at a time when the US administration is in confrontation with Iran in the Middle East. The results suggested disapproval of the US Voters for him.
During the midterm elections, the economy and the cost of living in the US have emerged as key issues. The Democrats focused on rising household expenses during the campaigns. Voters were also concerned about the direction where the country was heading.
The victory in midterm polls will mean the Democrats will have greater control over legislation, presidential appointments, and congressional oversight of the administration in the next two years. The Democrats will also be able to keep an eye on the Trump administration on various developments.
Reopening of impeachment on Trump likely?
Also, during his first tenure as President, the House of Representatives impeached him twice, only to be saved by the Senate. Now with Democrats in the majority in both chambers, they may reopen the impeachment proceedings against him. Trump may also find it tough as far as the budget is concerned. With Congress controlling government spending, Trump may find it tough to get approvals for funds, which may lead to extended budget negotiations.
