New Delhi: Seasonal changes often bring a rise in common infections such as cough, cold, flu, and viral fevers. While these illnesses are usually mild
in the general population, they can sometimes become more serious during pregnancy. This is because a pregnant woman’s immune system undergoes natural changes to support the growing baby, making her more vulnerable to infections and their complications.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Tripti Raheja, Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, spoke about seasonal infections and the risks they pose during pregnancy.
During the winter months, respiratory infections like colds and viral flu are particularly common. Pregnant women may experience symptoms such as fever, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. What may appear as a routine viral illness can lead to prolonged weakness, dehydration, or breathing discomfort if not managed properly. Early medical evaluation helps rule out complications and ensures safe treatment.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are another common concern during pregnancy. In many cases, they cause only mild symptoms such as low-grade fever, frequent urination, or burning while passing urine. However, if left untreated, UTIs can spread to the kidneys, leading to severe infection. In pregnancy, untreated urinary infections are also linked to an increased risk of early labor and preterm birth, making timely diagnosis essential.
Expectant mothers should be alert to warning signs that require immediate medical attention. Fever lasting more than a day, severe body aches, rashes, vomiting, breathlessness, or unusual tiredness should never be ignored. In later stages of pregnancy, reduced baby movements can also signal distress and must be evaluated promptly. These symptoms may indicate an underlying infection that needs medical care rather than home remedies.
Prevention plays a key role in reducing the risk of seasonal infections. Simple hygiene measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding crowded places during peak infection seasons, and drinking clean, safe water can make a significant difference. Food should always be freshly cooked and properly prepared to avoid food-borne infections. In areas where mosquito-borne diseases are common, wearing full-sleeved clothing and using pregnancy-safe mosquito repellents can offer protection.
Vaccination is another important preventive measure. Doctors often recommend certain vaccines, such as the influenza vaccine, which is considered safe during pregnancy and helps protect both the mother and the baby from severe illness.
Most importantly, pregnant women should avoid self-medication. Not all fever or cold medicines are safe during pregnancy, and taking the wrong medication can cause harm. Always consult a healthcare provider before taking any tablets or home remedies.
Seasonal infections may seem routine, but during pregnancy, they deserve careful attention. Early recognition, preventive care, and timely medical guidance can go a long way in ensuring the safety and well-being of both the mother and her baby.
